Hey friends of Omna,
We’ve been getting a lot of Q’s on the current recruiting climate, so here’s a quick synopsis:
📉 Companies (especially ones that have over-hired in anticipation of continued high levels of growth) are laying off - So there is an influx of candidates in the market at the moment (supply is up!)
❄️ There is also a little bit of a hiring freeze we’re noticing, where companies have put pause on a lot of recruiting-related activities (or are only prioritizing mission-critical roles), due to the uncertainty in the market (demand is low!)
💼 This means that it’s a hiring manager’s market again - where you’ve got plenty of qualified candidates applying for the same job … a stark contrast to even just 6 mo’s ago where a candidate could hold over 5+ offers at the same time
💡 What this means for a job seeker is that if you want a job, you’ve got to put in the time to prep for those interviews, or put together a A+ case study — the competition is stiff!
💰 Depending on how urgently you are trying to find a new job, you might have to be more flexible on your comp requirements — We’re starting to move past the days where an offer can be negotiated 15%++ upward, or where companies willing dole out $200K salaries for 3 years of work experience
🌐 Finally, take advantage of your network! Some of the best jobs available are filled even before they hit the market, so it helps to ask around, put yourself out there … get in contact with recruiters, former-managers, peers, etc.
Hopefully this was helpful - you can comment below if any Q’s and we’ll do our best to get back to you!
- Juliette
Let’s talk vertical farms & sustainability: A client breakdown - Wilder Fields
One of the clients I’ve been working with for a while now is Wilder Fields. They are an early stage vertical farming startup that aims to produce sustainably grown produce for the community.
They support local communities by vertically growing greens in repurposed buildings—reducing CO2 emissions, conserving water, and shortening the distance between harvest and enjoyment.
Their current farm is located in the space of what used to be an abandoned 135,000 sq ft Target store in Calumet City, just south of Chicago — peep the before & after below:
I’m a huge fan of what they do because there’s just a huge sense of community empowerment and social impact behind it all:
The company negotiates mutually beneficial relationships with city leaders to convert these abandoned big box stores —currently blighting commercial real estate markets— into profitable, tax-paying businesses
If done well, not only will they be providing opportunities for upwardly mobile jobs and environmentally sound innovations, but they will also produce food that promotes community health (by providing fresh produce to those living in nearby food deserts in Illinois and Northwest Indiana)
By ‘upcycling’ these vacant big-box structures into high-tech farms, they are helping revitalize the communities around them — and they are creating the blueprint for how to impart new life into empty buildings
It also doesn’t hurt that their greens are delicious, and use up to 95% less water than traditional methods to produce (Their proprietary technology uses a blend of machine learning, advanced environmental sensing, and image analysis to tailor and maintain optimum growing environments for individual crops through real-time environmental control)
They are currently working on ramping up to full capacity at their farm, and if you’re equally as into the company as I am, then you’re in luck! We’re helping to hire for a General Manager on their team, to help launch a new product line for them. You’d have to be on-site in Calumet City daily, but you’d get to join a star-studded team working to create real impact for communities here in Illinois and beyond. You’ll be expected to roll up your sleeves and get into the weeds (both literally and metaphorically…) — so make sure you are ready for that!
Finally, if you find yourself in Chicago, their produce is available in limited quantities at Dom’s Kitchen & Market and at Local Markets Food in Bucktown, should you want to check them out.
🗽 Save the Date!
Omna is hosting a Happy Hour in NYC on Thursday, Oct. 6 - it'll be a great way to meet others in tech who also came from consulting/banking, and we'll have a few speakers to share their startup experiences. More details to come soon.
