Omna Search: March (recruiting) Madness
Good Morning! This is another update from your favorite recruiting firm. Whether you’re actively looking or just keeping an ear open, we’re your friend that brings you the latest recruiting buzz in the startup, tech and VC space.
March (recruiting) Madness
March Madness is here! Is your team still in it? Or more like… whomp, whomp, bracket busted, wait till next year?
It’s a distracting time for many. According to analysis from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., a work outplacement firm, U.S. employers stood to lose about $13 billion in productivity during 2019’s tournament (...and that was for 2019, imagine that with the latest inflation factored in 🤯).
Naturally here at Omna, we’re always thinking about “recruiting.” But wait… March Madness + Recruiting 🤔. This got us wondering: What can we learn from the Big Dance when it comes to recruiting?
3 Takeaways 🏀 🏀 🏀
Don’t count out the underdog: Every year a top seed gets knocked out by an unknown team and this year was no different - St. Peter's Stuns No. 2 Kentucky. So it’s important to remember that once you’re in the tournament (interview process), don’t worry about what you may be lacking (if you’re competing against a #1 seed), but instead, focus on your strengths and what it takes to win (get the job).
You may be down but you’re not out: Late into the third quarter, your team is down 43 to 61, so you change the channel, but flip back just in time to see them come back for the win. You’re 15 minutes into the interview, a bit nervous, went off on a tangent, and the interviewer looks bored. Don’t give up. Stay focused. It’s never too late for a comeback.
Winning begins with preparation: Much like a team in the tournament, you’ll only have one chance to advance to the next round. Like a well-coached team, spend time preparing by watching films (researching the company) and practicing drills (mock interviews). As your coach, we can’t emphasize this enough: practice, practice, practice!
Now that we’re hyped up, let’s jump into this week’s highlights.
