July 2023 - Market Watch 👀
A few trends we’ve been noticing:
Many companies are opportunistically hiring. They know there’s plenty of top talent in the market today, and whilst they may not officially have any open roles advertised, many (who can afford it) have their eyes open to see if they can land their unicorn candidate 🦄
In general, candidates have less leverage than before re: negotiating comp on their offers, however, top talent still commands top dollar. From time to time, we’ll speak to a candidate who is getting all the offers today, and subsequently able to command a high price to accept one of them. It’s rarer, but it’s still happening
Competition for open roles remains high. I spoke to a ex-MBB + MBA candidate who mentioned that his response rate on applications to roles via LinkedIn was ~1% (yes, that low!)
Volume of applications are high, but quality isn’t always there. It feels like many candidates are just clicking ‘apply’ to anything and everything these days, but are underprepared when they actually get the interview, or don’t even have a good reason as to why they were interested in the first place
What this means for you as a candidate:
Hiring managers like to feel that you’re running toward an opportunity with them, v.s. running away from something. Make sure you have a good story around your interest and how an opportunity lines up with your career goals
It might be a better strategy to apply for fewer things (only the ones you are really excited about!) and give it all you’ve got, v.s. spread yourself too thin and have a mediocre application across them all
It helps to leverage your network to get your foot in the door / to the front of the line for select opportunities - many of the best opportunities get filled before they make it onto the market
If you are excited about a job, make sure you put in the time to prep for the interviews - candidates are going above and beyond these days to do well and stand out
