Friends of Opus,
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone got to enjoy some time off this past holiday season. We moved our newsletter again - this time to Substack. Here’s hoping it sticks.
We’re also exploring different avenues of engaging more with you. Should we curate more interesting jobs that we come across, outside of the ones we’re officially working on? Do you want more updates on what we’re seeing in the market? Let us know.

Opus Client Spotlight: Narrativ
Narrativ is a technology platform that partners with brands like Yeti, Best Buy, and Sephora, to help them grow and manage product recommendations on the open web.
Every month, billions of consumers search for honest product reviews from experts like The New York Times to YouTube creators. Today, the majority of product reviews link back to Amazon for purchase; Narrativ is helping to change that by helping brands redirect links for purchase to their own websites (i.e., I am redirected to buy a pair of Bose Headphones from Bose.com, as opposed to Amazon).
They build the tech and tools to turn honest reviews that tell the whole story about a product into a multibillion dollar acquisition channel for all brands.
Why Narrativ?
They’re growing, fast: Narrativ’s platform hosts 50+ partners spending $20mm+ a year including Best Buy, L’Oreal, Sephora, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Nordstrom, and Samsung. They’ve doubled revenue in 2020.
They’ve got a talented team: They’re a team of 50+ from places like Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Etsy, with a female founder that’s been awarded by the Financial Times, Forbes, and Inc. They’re hiring quickly, with plans to 2X their team in the next year.
They’re challenging the status quo: Breaking monopolies and diversifying industries is in their DNA. Come join them on a mission to democratize product recommendations for all and build a better internet for shoppers.
Who you’ll work closely with:
Shirley Chen - CEO & Founder: Ex-McKinsey, Forbes’ 30 Under 30 recipient, recognized as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and also the former Head of Marketing & BD at Moda Operandi
Denise Jin - VP Revenue: Ex-Bain and former Co-Founder & COO of a luxury wedding dress startup
Narrativ is hiring across the board for a variety of roles (Manager, Director) on their Growth Strategy team (Client-facing). If you’re excited about retail, ecommerce, and marketing — this could be a great fit for you. Interested parties please respond to this note and we can get you more info!
Pulse on the Market - Jan 2021
Tech companies have hit 2021 hiring in full swing - We’re noticing a lot of inbound outreach for hiring help at companies that had paused recruiting for a while (See: “We’re very bullish on hiring in tech” — Julia Pollak, labor economist at ZipRecruiter)
Despite this, we’re not fully in the clear yet: Layoffs are still going on at certain companies, though some of this seems like just delayed intent from 2020 (See: Dropbox to lay off 11% of workforce)
This past weekend, the mayors of SF, Austin, and Miami got together on Clubhouse to discuss the tech industry ‘exodus’ from SF to Miami/Austin. If you missed it, here are highlights from that chat
