It’s undoubtedly a weird time in the tech world right now. I’ve talked to a lot of people in past weeks who’ve been nervous to switch roles given the recent headlines, which make it sound like the entire tech industry is going to fold any day now, but the reality of it is: while hiring isn’t at the same volume as we saw 4-6 months ago, it is still happening more than you might expect. It may take a little longer for you to find a perfect role, but don’t lose hope if you’re currently on the job hunt.

Miscellaneous tips from a recruiter:

• Keep your elevator pitch BRIEF. I ask this in the nicest way possible 😅 I’m frequently on calls where people want to tell me where they grew up, then where they moved for college, then their internships, before diving into their actual work history in immense detail. I genuinely like small talk and getting to know people (recruiter here, can you blame me), but in the interest of time, just give a high-level overview starting with post-college work experiences. From there, I or hiring managers can ask about specifics as needed

• Take your physical address off your resume - it’s a legacy thing at this point, and you don’t want your home address floating around unnecessarily

• Add a hyperlink to your LinkedIn on your resume - makes it easy for everyone viewing your resume to instantly click through

• Speaking of LinkedIn…update your LinkedIn profile! Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people still list their current company as the one from two jobs ago, or need to refresh their location/title/skills (e.g. if we search for people who know SQL and you have it listed - boom, we’re reaching out). LinkedIn is by and large still the best way for us to find your profile, and the more accurate it is, the better and more relevant roles we can send you 😎
